Memorial Day Devotional

When the angel of the Lord appeared to Gideon, he said, “The Lord is with you mighty warrior.”

Judges 6:12 NIV

Today is Memorial Day, celebrated in the United States to honor all of those soldiers who are fallen and risked their lives for our freedom. This holiday came about right after the Civil War and continues to today and I am glad for that. I believe that we do such a bad job about letting our soldiers know how much we value them, and we should be dedicating more days to them; they dedicate years. They also give up their rights to be with their families at any time including holidays. If their wife is pregnant they get a call telling them what she had. If a parent dies, they get a personal visit and perhaps a trip home but not always. Once a man or woman signs up for the Armed Forces they are property of the United States and do what the government tells them to do. What they do is make sure all of us can sleep in a country that is free, and for that they should be honored and remembered.

That is why I am especially bothered by the Westboro Baptist Church. This is the group that goes around and pickets the American Soldiers’ funerals. They really are not a church, nor are they Baptist. I attend a Baptist Seminary and no one there would ever support them. I go to a Reformed Church and no one there would support them. My siblings are all Catholic and I know none of them or their faith would support them. The point I am trying to make is that they are not supported as the church yet they insist on using our name. Then they go out and they have the audacity to picket at a fallen soldier’s funeral. They picket the same soldier who died to maintain their freedom of speech. They claim that the soldier’s death is a just punishment for a gay country.

Now we all know that homosexuality is a sin but so is hatred. We  know that the Gospel we are given is a Gospel of love. God would have no part in any activity of hate. We need to know this truth and stand on it. We have to speak out and against any group of people who call themselves “Christians” or the “Church” and behave like they do. We need to be the ones who speak the loudest and respond the quickest and do whatever we can to stop them. We cannot sit by quietly and just hope they stop, but what can we do?

We can be involved vocally and get out there and support our American Soldiers. Put your flag out and attend a parade. No, better yet, go and visit the mothers and wives of the fallen soldiers in your neighborhood. Let them know that their fallen solider is being honored. Then be alert. Each time you hear of a soldier’s funeral that will be in your area, gather the members of your church and get there on the funeral day to be a barrier between those hateful people and the soldier’s family. Go there peacefully and prayerfully and let the rest of the world know what the Church really looks like.

Today is Memorial Day, a day to honor all those brave warriors who have died serving our country. Do something to remember them and use the freedom they preserved to spread the Gospel of Love.

Father God, I do thank You Lord for all the soldiers who are fallen. I ask that You be with their families and grant them peace this day. I pray also for all those who are serving and ask for their protection. Help us to remember to pray daily for our country and our soldiers, the mighty warriors of the United States. This I pray in Jesus’ Name.
