Then you will know the
truth, and the truth will set you free.

One of my
biggest pet peeves is the misuse of scripture. I just hate when someone takes a
quote from scripture and applies it incorrectly. The verse I have chosen today
is one of them. I have actually lost count on how many times this verse is used
incorrectly. Does it matter that this verse is misused? YES and that is because
it has a particular meaning that is significant.
Jesus is speaking to the Jews who did believe in Him and He is instructing them to
continue in His word and become His disciples. The truth that they will know is
that Jesus is the Son of God and He is the only way into heaven. There is no
other Father and there is no other way. Jesus is the only way. When this verse
is applied to any other truth it is misused and a lie. There is only one truth
and there is only one truth which sets you free. This truth of Jesus stands
supremely alone. If you know this truth, you stand on this truth and you are
free because of this truth.
There is another form of freedom which comes through the actions of mankind. We live in
a country that is free and today is the day we celebrate our independence. If
those who fought for that freedom were alive today, I wonder what they would
think and say to us. After all, we have wandered far away from their original intent.
Today that kind of freedom is jeopardized at the risk of being politically
correct. The latest example I have for you is the U.S. Open, where the
television station NBC allowed the omission of the words: Under God and
Indivisible during the Pledge of Allegiance. Later on they did apologize for
that infraction but why did they allow it in the first place? They allowed it
because there are some in this country who do not agree that we are a nation
under God. You know what? I agree with them. I do believe that this nation has
slipped out from under God and has asserted itself to be its own god, and that
is exactly why we are a country that is easily divisible. So it makes sense to
remove those words from the Pledge, after all it is the truth about us right? I
pray you want to strongly disagree with me. I pray you are mad by what you
read, I pray that when you get mad, you get up and get out and commit to doing
something, anything that forces you to claim this land once again for God.
All of us born in the United States were born with the opportunity to grow up and learn
about God and accept His truth, our freedom through His Son Jesus Christ. We
are only given this right because we were also born in a country where we are
free to worship God. A country where the Church fought for that freedom and
before leaving this world placed us safely under God so that nothing can divide
or destroy us. I pray as a Church that we remember it is our responsibility to
teach about these two freedoms and to do all that we can to preserve and
protect them. This I do pray in the Name of Jesus.
I am ending today’s devotional with the Pledge, and I get goose bumps just knowing that all
of us will be saying the pledge today.
Happy Birthday America
I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for
which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice
Let freedom ring,
